Key Commercial Auto Coverages Explained

Liability Coverage

Can protect your business against claims for bodily injury or property damage you or your drivers cause to others in an accident. Liability coverage will cover medical bills, repair costs, legal fees, and settlements. If your business vehicle is in an accident, and you or your employee is determined to be at fault, you could face lawsuits that threaten your finances. This is the core of commercial auto insurance and is required in most states. Example: Your delivery van rear-ends a car, injuring the driver and damaging their vehicle. Liability coverage pays for their medical treatment and car repairs, plus your legal defense if they sue.

Collision Coverage

Can pay for repairs or replacement of your business vehicle if it’s damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, regardless of who’s at fault. Accidents happen, and repairing or replacing a work vehicle can be costly, especially if it’s essential for your operations. Example: Your service truck hits a pole while navigating a tight job site, denting the front end. Collision coverage pays for the repairs so you can keep your crew on the road.

Comprehensive Coverage

Can cover non-collision damage to your vehicle from events like theft, vandalism, fire, weather events, or hitting an animal. Vehicles face risks beyond accidents, and replacing a stolen or damaged vehicle without coverage can disrupt your business and cash flow. Example: A hailstorm dents and cracks the windshield of your company SUV parked at a client’s site. Comprehensive coverage pays for the repairs or a replacement vehicle.

Medical Payment (MedPay) Coverage

Can pay medical expenses for you and your passengers injured in an accident, regardless of fault, covering hospital bills, doctor visits, and related costs. Injuries in accidents can lead to high medical costs, and this helps cover your team without relying on health insurance or personal funds. Example: Your driver and a coworker are injured in a minor fender bender while heading to a job. MedPay covers their ER visits and follow-up care, keeping costs off your books.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Can pay for injuries or damage to your vehicle/employees if hit by a driver with no insurance or insufficient coverage to pay for the damages. Not all drivers carry adequate insurance, and without this, you could be stuck paying for damages caused by someone else. Example: An uninsured driver runs a red light and totals your company van. This coverage pays for the replacement and any injuries to your driver.

Hired and Non-Owned Auto Coverage

Can protect against liability claims when employees drive their personal vehicles or rented vehicles for business purposes, covering damages or injuries they cause. If your employees use their own cars or you rent vehicles for work, your business could still be liable for accidents, and personal auto policies won’t cover business use. Example: An employee uses their personal car to pick up supplies and causes an accident. Hired and non-owned coverage pays for the other party’s damages and legal claims against your business.

Cargo Coverage

Insures goods or equipment being transported in your vehicles against damage, theft, or loss during transit. If your business transports valuable items, losing or damaging them could lead to financial loss or upset clients, and this coverage protects your bottom line. Example: A load of electronics you’re delivering is damaged when your truck hits a pothole. Cargo coverage reimburses the cost of the damaged goods, avoiding a dispute with your client.

Towing and Roadside Assistance Coverage

Can Cover costs for towing, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, or other roadside emergencies for your business vehicles. Breakdowns can strand your vehicles and delay operations, and paying for towing out of pocket adds up fast. Example: Your service van gets a flat tire en route to a client, stranding your crew. This coverage pays for the tow and tire repair, getting you back on schedule. If you're renting your shop and you've invested in upgrades like custom lifts or paint booths, this covers repairing or replacing those if they're damaged. Example: You've installed specialized shelving for parts, and a flood ruins it. Tenant improvements coverage pays to rebuild it to your specs. Example: A fire damages the custom exhaust system you added to your leased bay. This policy handles the extra costs beyond basic repairs.

Rental Reimbursement Coverage

Can pay for a rental vehicle if your business vehicle is out of service due to a covered loss, like an accident or theft. Downtime without a vehicle can halt your operations, and renting a replacement without coverage can be a major expense. Example: Your company pickup is in the shop for two weeks after a collision. Rental reimbursement covers the cost of a temporary truck so you can keep serving clients.
